What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Botox?

Botox® Botox in San Diego, CAhas become one of the most recognizable and iconic treatments in the cosmetic industry, giving many the perception that it is somewhat of a “cure-all” treatment for aging concerns. As convenient as that would be, unfortunately, that is not the case. There are advantages and disadvantages of Botox® that should be considered by anyone interested in the treatment. Below, we’ll break them down for you.

Advantages of Botox®

Speed & Efficiency

One of the largest benefits of Botox® is that it takes just minutes to perform, and only a few days to produce results. In a world where we are often seeking “quick-fix” solutions, Botox® provides just that. This enables patients to rejuvenate their appearance in a matter of minutes, with the flexibility to do so on their lunch break or in-between errands. These benefits also make the cost of Botox® quite economical compared to other anti-aging treatments, so it’s often an affordable solution.

Minimally-Invasive (& Safe)

As an injectable treatment, Botox® offers a much less intimidating treatment experience than other cosmetic procedures that might require surgery or other invasive techniques. This means that patients don’t have to worry about severe side effects or long recovery periods, and the risk of any serious complications is incredibly low.

A Variety of Uses

Another benefit to Botox® is that it can be used for a variety of treatments. Although it is primarily known as an anti-aging treatment for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and lines, it doesn’t end there. Botox® can also be used for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), migraines and TMJ.

Temporary Results

For anyone new to injectable treatments, altering your appearance may be a little scary. Fortunately, the results from Botox® last between 3 to 6 months. Although Dr. Pollack is an expert when it comes to injectable treatments, these brief results often give patients the reassurance that if they are unhappy with the outcome from treatment, the results will not be permanent by any means.

Disadvantages of Botox®

Temporary Results

As you can imagine, temporary results are both an advantage and a disadvantage! Most patients love their Botox® results, and unfortunately, they will only last between 3 and 6 months. This is a clear disadvantage compared to more invasive treatments or even other injectable treatments, which may last months or years longer.

Side Effects

Although minor, the side effects from Botox® cannot be ignored. After Botox® injections, patients may experience bruising, swelling, redness and discomfort in the treatment area. In most cases, these symptoms do not prevent patients from returning to their usual activities and lifestyle. However, it can be an inconvenience, and it’s something that should be considered. In rare cases, overuse of Botox® can prevent the use of certain facial muscles and result in what many people refer to as a “frozen” look.

Developing a Tolerance

Lastly, the body builds up a tolerance to Botox® over time. This means that after repeated treatments, it will take more and more Botox® to produce the same results as your initial treatment. For patients who plan on using Botox® treatments for several years, this is definitely a factor worth considering.

Can Fillers Make My Skin Sag?

Botox in San Diego, CAOne of the biggest myths regarding dermal fillers and injectables is that they make your skin sag. People assume that dermal filler formulas stretch out the skin as they’re injected, leaving loose, sagging skin when the dermal filler eventually fades away. Below, we’re going to debunk this myth as well as a few others.

False: Fillers Make Your Skin Sag

The fact is, dermal fillers add such a subtle and healthy amount of volume to the skin, that any skin stretching will be minimal. In fact, if you already have sagging skin or wrinkles, these fillers will take up the space that was once occupied by natural fat. In these cases, fillers can help eliminate sagging skin!

A related concern is that if you don’t repeatedly receive filler treatments, the skin will sag after the dermal fillers are broken down. This is also false, because as we stated above, the amount that the skin stretches during dermal filler injections is so minimal that it would not be noticeable. Patients who experience sagging after dermal fillers likely had sagging skin to begin with. These patients often continue to receive dermal filler treatments because they are so effective at reducing sagging skin – not creating it!

False: Dermal Fillers Look Fake

Dermal fillers are meticulously researched and created to look as natural as possible. In the hands of an experienced aesthetician, dermal fillers can look completely natural and will blend effortlessly into your skin’s natural appearance. If you’re concerned about receiving unnatural results, you only need to seek out a treatment provider who has a long history of success in performing these treatments.

False: Fillers are Painful

Today, dermal filler and injectable treatments are performed after applying topical anesthetic to the treatment area. This means the skin is numb when injections are delivered, so the treatment is completely painless! While there may be some minor swelling after treatment, it typically fades within a day or two. This is actually one of the biggest benefits of dermal fillers and injectables – you can get right back to your usual activities almost immediately!

Your Most Frequently Asked Questions About Botox®

Botox in San Diego, CAWe all want to look our youngest without having to undergo any major surgery or procedures. Botox® has gained popularity over the past several years for its minimally invasive technique, no need for a recovery period and impressive results. We wanted to answer some of our patients most frequently asked questions about Botox®, so you can be as informed as possible before your consultation with Dr. Pollack.

Can you stop Botox® once you start?

Yes, you can absolutely stop receiving Botox® injections once you start them. Many patients are worried that their Botox® results will look unnatural or give them a windblown effect. With recent innovations in the formula, Botox® results look more natural than ever. However, if you’re still not feeling your look, the effects of Botox® will gradually wear off over about a four month period. Once you start seeing your fine lines and wrinkles come back again, you can either opt to get another treatment or opt to go all natural.

Can Botox® lift your eyelids?

Recently, Botox® has been used to lift the outer tail of the eyebrow to give patients a “fox eye” look. This use of Botox® gives patients a more feminine, almond-shaped, lifted appearance to the eye. Botox® cannot, however, be used to lift sagging or drooping eyelids that cause a tired or disinterested appearance. For that, we advise you to consider blepharoplasty instead. Blepharoplasty is a very minimally invasive surgery that removes the excess, sagging skin around the upper and lower eyelids to give you a refreshed look.

At what age should you start getting Botox®?

While there is no perfect age to start getting Botox® injections, we typically see patients between 35 and 65 years old coming in for regular Botox® treatments. This is around the time the skin starts to naturally produce wrinkles around the upper third of the face. That being said, we have seen many younger patients come in to get Botox® injections as well for their premature facial wrinkles. The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for Botox® is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Pollack.

What are the main areas for Botox® injections?

The most common areas for our patients to receive Botox® are in the forehead, along the outer eyes, between the brows and on the upper bridge of the nose. These placements of Botox® injections will treated unwanted lines and wrinkles along the forehead, crow’s feet, frown lines and bunny lines. Botox® is also an FDA-approved treatment to reduce excess sweating caused by hyperhidrosis.

Should you get Botox® before wrinkles?

While this isn’t very commonly seen, Botox® can be used as a preventative measure to stop the creation of wrinkles before they start to appear. Younger patients who have found issues with makeup settling in the fine lines of their face often opt to get Botox® injections to fight premature signs of aging around the face, however, this is all personal preference. If you’re considering Botox® to prevent the onset of wrinkles, talk to Dr. Pollack during your one-on-one consultation.
