Gynecomastia in San Diego, CA

Male breast reduction, or gynecomastia surgery, is a breast enhancement procedure that tightens and firms the chest in men by reducing the accumulation of fatty or glandular tissue in the pectoral region. For men in San Diego, La Jolla, Alpine, and nearby communities in Southern California who wish to eliminate excess fatty tissue in the chest, a gynecomastia surgery procedure at Pollack Plastic Surgery may be the perfect solution.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia refers to the presence of excess fatty or glandular tissue in the pectoral region in men causing the appearance of overly developed breasts. Gynecomastia may be the result of weight gain or hormonal imbalances. In some cases, treating the hormonal imbalance may resolve the condition, but many men choose to have gynecomastia surgery or liposuction treatment to eliminate excess fatty deposits in the pectoral region.

Will health insurance cover Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction)?

Health insurance providers may cover gynecomastia surgery in cases where it is deemed medically necessary; however, if the surgery is performed for purely cosmetic reasons, most insurance companies will not cover it. Pollack Plastic Surgery is proud to provide CareCredit® financing as well as flexible payment options to help our patients manage the cost of gynecomastia treatment.

What causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia may be caused by weight gain, hormonal fluctuations, genetics, or may appear as a side effect of certain medications.

Who is a good candidate for Gynecomastia surgery (Male Breast Reduction)?

You may choose to undergo gynecomastia surgery to achieve the chest contour you desire, especially if your attempts to reduce the fatty tissue through diet and exercise have failed. In order to be eligible for gynecomastia, or any other plastic surgery procedures, patients should be in general good health and refrain from smoking.

What can I expect from a Gynecomastia procedure?

Expect your gynecomastia procedure to take between one and three hours. Depending on the extent of your procedure, local or general anesthesia may be administered. The procedure may be completed using liposuction, excision surgery, or a combination of both. This factor depends on whether the tissue to be removed is composed exclusively of fat or includes glandular tissue, as well as the amount of tissue to be removed. Liposuction may be sufficient to remove tissue that is purely composed of fat cells. If you have deposits of glandular tissue or excess skin that may sag after liposuction, then excision surgery may be necessary. This procedure requires incisions along the lower fold of the breast and also repositions the nipple. You may experience temporary or permanent loss of sensation in your nipple area, although in most cases, normal sensation returns after a few months.

Recovery from Gynecomastia

Immediately after the procedure, and for the next few days, you may experience swelling and minor bruising, but these symptoms will resolve on their own within the first few weeks after the procedure. If you require the surgical removal of excess skin, you may have a drainage tube inserted in each breast, and these will be removed after about a week. You will be required to wear a compressive vest for four weeks following treatment to optimize healing of the skin and reduce swelling, and you may resume regular physical activity after this period.

In San Diego, La Jolla, Alpine, or neighboring communities in Southern California who want to tighten the pectoral region and eliminate excess breast tissue can contact Pollack Plastic Surgery to find comprehensive treatment for gynecomastia.
